embroidered skies

Last week I was trying to capture in thread the many colors during various times of day or night in the sky. Using the zigzag stitch on my sewing machine I worked out the shading on this first one on a blue denim background.

This next one I again used only the zigzag stitch with
lots of changes of thread, but this time on a yellow linen. Again a rough surface texture was the result.

I was not happy with the rough texture the zigzag created on the surface of the fabric so this time I used single straight stitch on a bright red cotton fabric. This was a much slower way to embroider. Although the surface texture appears much smoother I am not happy with the affect created so will probably embroider a few more skies attempting to find the shading I'm looking for. All three were created in a hoop using a lot of thread colors on the machine and will be 8 by 8 inches if I ever frame them.

  1. the effect is very beautiful, even though the texture might end up being rough. Love the looks of all three; zigzag seems to give better blending however (imho).
