February

January brought me several beautiful Amaryllis
gifts that bloomed through February.

This first bright amaryllis has short stems, 10 inches,
with 4 flowers, each about 8 inches in diameter.
This striped beauty bloomed later on stems about
3 feet high with blooms about 10 inches in diameter.
This last one is still blooming and was a surprise.
It was a gift from last year that
I had hoped might bloom again.
The New Image Artists meeting for February
was close to Valentines Day so we needed a
Valentine theme for the centerpiece
Julia Fogg helped me create cake pops
for the center of the centerpiece.
She made a red velvet cake
for the base of the pops.

Saturday, February 22 was the opening of the
NO FABRIC, NO RULES exhibit at
the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg.
Here, a few of the artworks we saw.
This small piece (20 by 11 inches)
by Connie L. Broy, NOTHING BUT THREAD
is embroidered on recycled dryer sheets.

PACKAGED PINWHEELS (44 by 28 inches)
is by Eileen Doughty
and was shown in a window so it glowed.
Masking tape, bubble wrap, and shipping tape.
This extraordinary art is by Jennifer L. Hand.
WHILE WE HAVE LIGHT....is 60 by 48 inches.
Oak leaves, thread, vellum, graphite, beeswax.
Joan Dryer had two quite different artworks
in the exhibit.
This first one TIME PIECES is 20 by 20 inches
and is of tree bark and thread.
Her FLAG is 43 by 17 inches and was hung
in the center of the room.
She stitched Dental X-rays and MRI film.
 Mary Beth Bellah created her
CHICKENS IN THE BEER GARDEN
from Polytex feed sacks, bottle caps, wire, thread,
bubble wrap, and batting. It is 72 by 40 inches.
TRAVEL QUILT is by Sally Cooney Anderson.
It is 36 by 24 inches,
a plastic assemblage using hotel key cards.

My two are at the end and
were mentioned in my last blog.

One idea now taking hold is having each member
of New Image Artists
create one large scissors or is that scissor ?
Each will be identically sized.
Scissors may be a beginning of a group piece.
Opening Saturday, February 29  at the BlackRock
Center for the Arts in Germantown, MD,
HANDCRAFTED: FIBER ART + TURNED WOOD
My SATIRICAL STILLNESS is included.
And, last.....
My ONCE READ NOT FORGOTTEN
 of paperback books was included
along with my big Tyvek piece, SEISMIC SHIFT

in the NO FABRIC, NO RULES exhibit.

There will be more news and
further developments
in March of 2020

Art Work Comes and Goes

Often my artwork comes and goes.
Some pieces travel further than I have ever travelled.
Not Always Green has recently returned form The Taiwan
International Quilt Exhibition 2016 in Tainan City, Taiwan.
Window Box is now at the International Korea  Bojagi Exhibit
in Seoul, South Korea
KISS: In Any Language is leaving tomorrow
to go to the SPUN 2016 Innovative Fiber Exhibition
in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The opening will be September 10, 2016.
Three Flowers left the studio for places unknown.
They may be at Vicky Fogg's desk at
the Washington Post or where ever she wanted to hang it.?
I have been thinking about butterflies for the past month
and wondering how I can show them as the delicate
winged creatures they are. Perhaps in a cluster.
Maybe as small lacy versions of themselves?
And I am looking at old paintings.
This is probably 5 by 6 feet,  50 years old,
and loosely painted on plywood.
Keep watching as I love a puzzle
and don't know what is coming next.

Visions Art Museum, C2C, New Image Artists, Barbara Lee Smith, and Jazz exhibits, San Diego.

Continuing a review of the current shows at Visions Art Museum.
The night of the reception I took a few pictures.
Below is the entrance to the Coast To Coast show.
Work in the C2C show is by The New Image Artists
and the California Fibers group.

Guests wandering around the art work.
One area of the shop.
Coming in the front door you are greeted with
view of art and craft work available in the shop.
A view looking forward to the entrance.
Barbara Lee Smith is having a show in one of the rooms
of the museum. Above on the left is Marshland Reflections
and on the right, Mountain and Grasses.
Left is Salt Edge at 40 by 65 inches
and on the right, South Jetty Fog at 30 inches square.
Marshland Remembered and Marshland Morning.
Barbara's work does not photograph well. These two
pieces appear darker in color both here and in the catalog.

Mt personal favorite of this show is a two part piece
titled Mountain and Grasses, 25 by 50 inches.
Day Break is 72 by 48 inches.
Barbara drew large crowds exclaiming about
the beauty of her work and wondering about the
process that goes into her atmospheric landscapes.
Another show going on at the same time is called Jazz.
Almost all of these small quilts were sold at the opening reception.
From San Diego we drove up the coast to L.A.
(a view from the old Marine Land site in Palos Verdes).
And then home to this.
Life seems to be a study of contrasts…….
